Ready-made workshop · For managers and leaders

The Psychology of Redundancy

Leading people through redundancy before, during and after, with clarity, dignity and humanity.

Dannielle Haig facilitating a workshop with a group of leaders

Redundancy is one of the hardest things a leader will ever have to do. Most managers are given the process and the legal script, but very little on the human side: how the news will be heard, how to stay steady in the conversation, what happens to the team that remains, and what it costs the person delivering it.

This workshop fills that gap. Grounded in psychology, it helps leaders handle redundancy in a way people can respect, including the people who are leaving.

Who it's for

  • Line managers and senior leaders who are about to deliver, or have recently delivered, redundancy decisions

  • Leadership teams preparing for a restructure

  • HR and People partners supporting managers through the process

Before, during and after

The workshop runs as three 2-hour sessions following a deliberate six-part arc, with each part building on the last.

Before

  1. 01

    Understanding the decision.

The context, the constraints and your responsibility as a leader, and the gap between what you intend and how it lands.

  2. 02

    The human experience.

How redundancy is felt in the moment and remembered months later, and why perception becomes reality after disruption.

During

  1. 03

    The conversation.

What to say and what not to say, staying clear without being cruel, responding to emotion, and ending the conversation with dignity.

After

  1. 04

    The ripple effect.

Leading the team that remains, the stories teams tell themselves after disruption, and what you need to stabilise first.

  2. 05

    The leader's load.

Guilt, moral strain and burnout, and how to protect your own capacity while you carry it.

  3. 06

    Leading forward.

Rebuilding trust, confidence and momentum through consistency, predictability and the signals you send.

What you'll leave with

  • Confidence and clear language for redundancy conversations

  • Insight into your own default under pressure, and what it costs the conversation

  • A plan for steadying the team that remains

  • Practical ways to manage the emotional load you carry as a leader

  • A leader workbook to return to as the situation evolves
